It’s Monday already. Wow, that weekend sure went fast. On Friday, Little Pumpkin Doodle and I headed over to Home Depot. I’m not a gardener, in fact I find it stressful. I tend to kill the heartiest of plants. However, if I’m going to teach LPD about living an organic lifestyle, I figured she better learn how to grow some fruits, herbs or vegetables.
Growing up we had sugar cane, pomegranates, mint, fennel and chickens in our back yard. My grandmother Elise, was from Haiti, so when one of us kids had an upset tummy, she would go to the garden, cut some mint and fennel, then make a tea out of it with her mortar and pestle.
My sister and I didn’t know that the correct name of Memere’s gadget was called a mortar and pestle, we just called it, “chaka, chaka,” maybe we watched to many Land of the Lost episodes. Lucky for me, when LPD and I arrived at Home Depot we had the most patient garden expert, and after hearing my previous tales of gardening woe, she kindly potted everything for us before we left. It took some of the fun out of it, but LPD was able to help (that’s her on the right with her tutu and what she call her princess shoes). The sales rep assured me that what we purchased was almost impossible to kill, so I thought I would document our journey. From left to right we have: Basil, Mint, Rosemary, Thyme, Onions (I know not the best picture).
So far so good. She gave me a couple of great tips: 1)put additional water in the tray, so the plants can get fed from underneath, 2) if I lift the box and it feels light then the plants do not have enough moisture. When I’m ready to use some herbs, just purchase some children’s scissors so LPD can cut her own herbs.
Now after doing some research after the fact, I should have utilized some of the green gardening websites, that I since found for greener gardening techniques:
www.urbanorganicgardener.com/diy-gardening/ (great DIY Projects and gardening in small spaces)
earthfirst.com/urban-gardening-you-can-grow-food-no-matter-where-you-live/
www.towergarden.com/ Tante Lisa sent this over, it’s so cool, but pricey.

Hope your Monday is off to a great start. I’m so excited, I’ll be leaving for Oregon on Wednesday and will be tweeting my adventures while visiting my sister. Stay Tuned.

I grew tomatos 3 summers ago it went pretty well for a first timer. I bought 4 Plants and replanted them in the yard. The satisfaction of my family and I being able to eat something we grew was priceless. They tasted, looked &smelled so much better than store bought. I do want to start an herb garden this year I look forward to reading more about yours and your daughters adventure.
Hi Anara. Always good to hear from you. I wish I was bold enough to plant tomatoes. I think I’ll leave that one for next year, lol! I have to admit LPD is enjoying watering the herbs and adding herbs to every meal. What are you growing this spring?
